Naomi Deynem, Chair of Ashton Hayes Parish Council, and Project Coordinator, Garry Charnock, discuss the additional tree planting programme that is scheduled as part of the village Going Carbon Neutral project. In the past few years, village residents have planted more than 8000 trees within the vicinity. The project aims to double the number of trees in an effort to provide a local carbon dioxide sink that will help to offset carbon dioxide emissions. Local landowners have already offered tracts of land for tree planting and are also considering growing energy crops that could be used by a new grass-fuelled power station in Shropshire. General photographs

The village of Ashton Hayes lies around 5 miles east of Chester, at the edge of the Cheshire plains. It is a thriving and busy community with approximately 1000 inhabitants in 350 properties. There is an excellent primary school with 150 children and a private nursery with 300 children. There are several businesses in the village, including the popular Golden Lion pub, friendly post office and and the local branch of a doctor's surgery. Several of the business sponsors have employees who live in the village. Our local bus service is very restricted but we have good rail connections to Chester from nearby Mouldsworth station. We are also fortunate in having landowners and farmers who demonstrate great concern for the environment and who are supporting the project.

We erected our new signs on January 22nd, the week of the project launch. (Below) Dr Roy Alexander, who is responsible for Project Technical Liaison, fixes a sign into position.

Our biodiversity survey will record plants and trees, such as these hawthorn hedges and appleblossom.
